The black bear is a good climber, and because of its strong and curved claws, it can easily climb any tree. They can hide on trees i a conflict with a rival or stronger bear or they are searching for food. The claws are also effective tools for gathering food and digging caves for the winter shelter.
The black bear's sense of smell is very well developed. Bears have been observed traveling long distances because they were following the scent of food. On the other hand, its vision is not very good, which makes it a good idea to be noisy and avoid sneaking when traveling in bear areas, for not to surprise and provoke the bear.
Black bears are omnivorous, but their food consist mainly of herbal foods such as berries, fruits, nuts, grasses, roots, shoots, bark and the like. In addition, it will eat meat in the form of insects, fish and lizards. The need for protein-rich meat is highest right before, or after the bears come out of the den, where they lose a large part of their muscle mass.
