The white-handed gibbon monkey is the smallest of the so-called human monkeys. Human monkeys are the most developed of the monkeys, and are known for a lack of facial hair and a tail. The gibbon monkey is both fast and strong. With its very long arms it can swing through the tree tops and cover over 10 meters in each arm swing. The gibbon monkey does not use legs and feet to grip when swinging in the trees. Here, the body and legs function more like a pendulum, giving the gibbons more speed in the swing. If the gibbon occasionally enters the ground, it uses its legs to come forward. Here the arms are raised above the head, to keep the balance.

Gibbon monkeys are primarily monogamous, and the couple often stay together for many years, giving birth to several cubs. Gibbon monkeys get 1 young at a time, which is carried around on the mother's stomach for the first few months until it has learned the acrobatic leaps. The young stays with the male and female, helping to care for smaller siblings until they find an area in the rainforest to live in, or a mate.

The Gibbon monkey is today declared endangered. The biggest threat to the gibbon monkeys is poaching. The Gibbon monkeys are hunted both for their meat sold as bushmeat and for pet sales. Hunting for gibbon monkeys is illegal, but the areas where the monkeys live are not very well protected, which means that the population of wild gibbon monkeys is declining.
