Persian Onager

Animals in Asia

The Persian onager is a wild donkey. It is known for its bright sand-colored coat, with its white belly and legs. Across the middle of the back there is a black stripe which is characteristic for all donkeys. The legs are short and the hooves small, which is perfect for the living conditions in a rocky desert landscape.

Persian onagers live in groups of varying sizes with a male or an older female as leader. Onagers are always wary of their enemies. Its primary defense is its ability to run fast, but occasionally it is seen that stallions work together to chase away predators. Onagers can live a long time without water, which sometimes can be quite rare in the desert.

There are three subspecies of Asian wild donkeys, with the onager being one of them. The number of individuals varies from subspecies to subspecies. However, it is true that all subspecies are declared endangered. Worldwide, there are 145 onagers, spread across 77 European zoos. In the wild there are between 600-800 wild onagers left.
Over the past 21 years, the population has decreased by as much as 28%. Today, wild onagers live exclusively in protected areas in southern and central Iran.

In the Ree Park Safari, you can see the onagers on the Asian steppe, along with the Bactrian camels.

"...did you know that for many centuries the onager was hunted for sports by Persian nobility, and young onagers were captured for breeding?"
